A locked Canvas module usually opens after you complete the prerequisite or requirement named in the module. If the message says the module is locked until a date, must be completed in order, or is unavailable to you, that rule is controlled by the course-not your browser. Use the message to identify the cause, verify your completion in Grades, and contact the instructor only when the course record and the lock do not match.
Why Canvas says a module is locked
Canvas gives instructors several ways to control progress. A module can depend on a previous module, require specific actions inside the current module, force items to be completed in order, or remain closed until a scheduled date. Some courses also use differentiated assignments or Mastery Paths, so two students may correctly see different content.
The fastest diagnosis is to read the small status text directly under the module name. Write down the exact wording before trying anything. “Prerequisite,” “complete all items,” “score at least,” “locked until,” and “not available” point to different fixes.

Finish the named prerequisite module
If Canvas names an earlier module, open that module and inspect every item. A page may need to be viewed, a file marked done, a discussion posted, or an assignment submitted. A checkmark beside some items does not mean the entire prerequisite is complete.
Match the exact requirement
“Submit” is different from “score at least.” If a minimum score is required, an uploaded attempt can still leave the next module locked. Compare the module requirement with the score and submission state shown in Grades.
Return to the first unfinished item
When the course requires sequential completion, opening a later page in a new tab will not advance the module. Start at the first item without a completion mark and use the course navigation to continue in order.
Check the unlock date and time zone
A future date is an availability rule, not a loading error. Compare the displayed time with the course time zone and your syllabus. If the syllabus and Canvas conflict, send both details to the instructor.
Verify enrollment and assignment access
If classmates can see an item that you cannot, confirm you are in the correct course section and entered through the institution's normal Canvas login. The item may be assigned to a specific section, group, or student list.
Allow for grading or Mastery Path decisions
A manually graded assignment can hold later items until a score is posted. In a Mastery Path, the next content may appear only after the source assignment is graded and Canvas assigns the appropriate path.
Refresh a stale course state once
After confirming the requirement is complete, reload the Modules page, sign out and back in, or try a supported browser. Do not repeatedly resubmit graded work. If the mismatch remains, it needs an instructor or Canvas support review.
How to report a Canvas lock that looks wrong
A precise report is more likely to be fixed quickly than “Canvas is not working.” Include:
- course, section, module, and assignment names;
- the exact lock or prerequisite message;
- a screenshot that includes the module requirement icons;
- the submission time and score shown in Grades;
- your browser and device;
- whether signing out and returning through the school portal changed the result.
If the problem affects only one assignment, message the instructor first. If the entire course fails to load or Canvas reports a service problem, use your institution's Canvas support route.
