Guided Study
Guided Study is a tutoring mode rather than an answer mode. Instead of handing you the solution, it starts from your own attempt, works out where you actually got stuck, and gives progressively stronger hints until the concept holds. It is currently in beta and requires a signed-in account.
- Start with your attempt
The flow opens at "Step 1 of 4 — Your attempt". Show your working, even if it is wrong; the wrong step is the useful information.
- Ask for what you need
Use I'm stuck for a nudge, Just explain it if you want the reasoning outright, or Teach me to be walked through it properly.
- Get graded hints, not the answer
Hints get stronger only as you need them, so you keep as much of the thinking as possible.
- Prove you have it
Use Practice This to generate a similar question, or Generate Practice Exam to build a full test from the topics you have been working on.
- Watch topic mastery build
Guided Study tracks mastery per topic. Mastery updates once Apex has checked an attempt, so it reflects work you have actually done rather than time spent on the page.
Connect a course for better hints. A Guided Study course keeps its notes, sources and mastery together. Upload your own material — PDF, DOCX, PPTX, TXT or MD, up to 20 MB each — and Apex will search it and quote your own notes and readings back to you in hints, instead of explaining from generic sources.
Voice Tutor
Voice Tutor lets you talk through a problem out loud with a tutor that can see the page you are on. You ask by voice, it answers by voice, and you can keep asking follow-ups without restarting. It requires a signed-in account.
- Open the tab you want help with
Voice Tutor reads the tab it is started on, so open your assignment, reading or quiz first. It is ready when the panel says so.
- Start a session
Choose Start 10-minute Voice Tutor. Sessions run 10 minutes, and you get up to 10 sessions per day.
- Grant microphone access
Chrome will ask for microphone permission the first time. Voice Tutor uses your microphone plus snapshots of that one tab, and nothing else.
- Talk normally
Ask what you would ask a tutor sitting next to you. Follow-ups continue the same session, so you never have to re-explain the question. Mute mic pauses input when you need to think or talk to someone.
- Keep going as the page changes
Because it reads the current tab, you can move to the next question and keep the same session running.
One at a time. Voice Tutor and Lecture Recording both use the microphone, so stop one before starting the other. The extension will tell you if you try to run both.
For what a voice tutor is useful for and how it compares to typing, see the AI Voice Tutor guide.
Choosing How Much Help You Get
Guided Study and Voice Tutor share one setting that decides how much Apex tells you versus how much it makes you work out. Change it whenever the situation changes — there is no wrong setting, and the same student wants different things the night before an exam than during revision.
- Adaptive
Apex adjusts as it goes, based on how you are doing on the current topic. A sensible default if you are not sure.
- Answers first
Leads with the answer, then the reasoning. Best when you are short on time and want to check your work.
- Balanced
An even split between the result and the method.
- Teach me
Holds the answer back and works through the reasoning with you. Slowest, and the one that actually prepares you for a closed-book exam.
You can also set response length, and reset your preferences at any time from the Voice Tutor controls.
Put the Guide Into Action
Install the extension and start getting step-by-step help across any LMS.
