What is an AI tutor?
An AI tutor is software that teaches the way a tutor does, rather than answering the way a search engine does. The distinction is behavioural: an answer engine gives you the result; a tutor starts from what you tried, finds the exact step where you went wrong, and gives you the smallest push that gets you moving again. One optimises for finishing the question, the other for being able to do the next one without help.
Most tools marketed as AI tutors are answer engines with a chat box. A few genuinely tutor. The test is simple: give it a wrong attempt and see whether it hands you the solution or asks you a question back.

Voice Tutor
The same tutoring, out loud. Voice Tutor can see the page you are studying, so you ask about the question in front of you without describing it first, hear the explanation spoken back, and follow up without restarting. It adapts to you
Both modes share one control — Adaptive, Answers first, Balanced, or Teach me — plus adjustable response length. Upload your syllabus, notes and slides and the tutoring works from your course's material and notation instead of a generic textbook's. The night before a deadline you can ask for answers first; during revision you can make it hold the answer back. There is no wrong setting, only a wrong setting for the situation.

The honest summary: a good human tutor is still the gold standard for a subject you are seriously struggling with, and AI tutoring is the thing that exists at 11pm on a Tuesday, costs a fraction as much, and never gets tired of "wait, why?". For most students they are not competitors — the AI handles the daily volume, and a human handles the crisis subjects if budget allows.
What AI tutoring is genuinely good and bad at
- Good: working through problem sets step by step, explaining a concept five different ways until one lands, unlimited practice questions, being available the moment you are stuck, and never making you feel slow for asking.
- Mixed: multi-step numerical work (the method is usually right; arithmetic slips happen — check the working), and diagram-heavy material (depends on what it can see).
- Bad: formal proofs, knowing what your specific examiner emphasises, motivation and accountability, and anything where the assessed skill is the thing you would be delegating.
Does AI tutoring actually help you learn?
The components it is built from are among the best-evidenced techniques in learning research: retrieval practice (attempting before being told), graded hints rather than full solutions, self-explanation, and spaced practice. Tutoring modes that force an attempt first are applying those findings; answer engines that skip the attempt are not — which is exactly why Guided Study starts from your attempt instead of your question.
The honest caveat: no tool makes learning passive. If you use a tutoring mode in answers-first setting for everything and never redo problems unaided, you have bought a faster way to not learn. The tool sets the table; the retrieval is still yours to do.
Is using an AI tutor allowed at my school?
Tutoring is the least controversial use of AI in education — it is the same help a human tutor provides, at software prices. But policies vary by institution and by course, and the same tool that is encouraged for studying can be prohibited during assessment.
